Dragon Coastal Races (31 July to 1 August 2027)
The Dragon Coastal Races are a series of trail ultramarathons along the Wales Coast Path and nearby inland sections. The event offers three distance options:
- 100 miles from Rhossili Bay to Cardiff Bay
- 50 miles from Margam Park to Cardiff Bay
- 50 km from Ogmore by Sea to Cardiff Bay
Routes combine clear, non-technical trails, sandy beaches, steep sand dunes, areas of shingle and forest singletrack. Key landmarks on the courses include Worm’s Head, Margam Park, Kenfig Sands, Merthyr Mawr dune system, Ogmore Castle, Nash Point, Atlantic College, Llantwit Beach, Porthkerry Park, Barry, Penarth Pier and the final stretch across Cardiff Bay Barrage to the Captain Scott Memorial and the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay.
Navigation is supported by Wales Coast Path signage plus additional running arrows and reflective tape where the route leaves the coast path. GPS files and live tracking are provided. Checkpoint provision differs by distance: 11 checkpoints for the 100, 7 for the 50, and 4 for the 50 km, offering hot and cold drinks and sweet and savoury snacks; the 100 has one drop bag location at Pyle.
Organisers require a compulsory kit list that is non-negotiable. The 100-mile distance has recommended prior experience of 40 to 50 mile ultras.
