Event overview

The Dragon Coastal Races are three ultra-trail events along the Wales Coast Path on 18 and 19 July 2026. The races start at different coastal points and all finish in Cardiff Bay at the Norwegian Church, via the Cardiff Bay Barrage and the Captain Scott Memorial. The courses follow mainly clear, non-technical trails and include beach running, sand dunes and sections of shingle.

The routes pass notable landmarks and varied terrain. The 100-mile course begins at Worm’s Head and includes the southern Gower coastline, Swansea Bay, an inland section through Afan Forest and Margam Park before reaching Kenfig. The 50 and 30 mile routes join further east, with sections through Porthcawl, the Merthyr Mawr dunes, Ogmore stepping stones and the Vale of Glamorgan Heritage Coast. Key coastal features include Nash Point, Atlantic College, Llantwit Beach, Porthkerry Park, Barry, Sully Island and Penarth Pier. Approximate total ascent: 100 - 3400 m, 50 - 1300 m, 30 - 460 m.

Practical information

The event is linear so participants must arrange transport to the start or use event coaches from Cardiff Bay (coach seats must be selected in advance). Registration takes place at the finish base and at the start locations; GPS trackers are fitted before the races. There are checkpoints with food and drink: 12 for the 100, 7 for the 50 and 4 for the 30. Drop bags are available for the 100 and 50. A compulsory kit list applies. Minimum age is 18 and the organisers recommend prior long-ultra training for the 100-mile distance.

Entry fees and transport prices are listed by distance below, and finishers receive a buckle or medal, live GPS tracking, checkpoint support, drop bags, route GPS files and a post-event meal at the Norwegian Church. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
