The Dragon Coastal Races
The Dragon Coastal Races are three ultramarathon footraces that follow the Wales Coast Path to a common finish at the Captain Scott Memorial beside the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay. Routes are described as clear and non-technical, with additional markings and GPS files provided for navigation.
Distances offered
- 100 miles from Rhossili Bay to Cardiff Bay
- 50 miles from Kenfig Sands to Cardiff Bay
- 30 miles from Dunraven Bay to Cardiff Bay
The 100-mile route begins on the Gower coast at Worms Head and travels along the southern Gower and Swansea Bay coastline before passing through an inland night section in Afan Forest, then Margam Park en route to Kenfig Sands. The 50-mile race joins at Kenfig Sands and continues along the coast through Porthcawl, across the Merthyr Mawr dunes and the Ogmore Castle stepping stones into the Vale of Glamorgan coastal section. The 30-mile race joins at Dunraven Bay and passes Nash Point, Atlantic College, Llantwit Beach, Porthkerry Park, Barry and Penarth before the final climb to the barrage and finish.
Route statistics list approximately 3400 metres ascent for the 100, 1300 metres for the 50 and 460 metres for the 30. Checkpoints supply snacks and hot and cold drinks (12 for the 100, 7 for the 50, 4 for the 30).
