Event overview

The Dragon Coastal Races are three ultra-trail events that follow the Wales Coast Path and finish at the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay. The event offers the following distances:

  • 100 miles from Rhossili Bay to Cardiff Bay
  • 50 miles from Kenfig Sands to Cardiff Bay
  • 30 miles from Dunraven Bay to Cardiff Bay

The routes use largely clear, non-technical coastal trails and include a mix of sandy beaches, sand dunes, shingle and some inland forest and park sections. Key route features named in the course description include Worm’s Head, the southern Gower coastline, Mumbles, Afan Forest, Margam Park, Kenfig, Porthcawl, Merthyr Mawr dune system, Ogmore Castle stepping stones, Vale of Glamorgan Heritage Coast, Nash Point Lighthouse, Atlantic College, Llantwit Beach, Porthkerry Park, Barry, Penarth Pier, Kymin Steps, the Cardiff Bay Barrage and the Captain Scott Memorial.

Course, logistics and entries

Route ascent is given as approximately 3400 m for the 100, 1300 m for the 50 and 460 m for the 30. Checkpoint provision differs by distance: 12 for the 100, 7 for the 50 and 4 for the 30, offering hot and cold drinks and sweet and savoury snacks. Drop bags are available for the 100 (two locations noted) and for the 50 (one location).

The race is linear, so participants must arrange travel to the start or use event buses from Cardiff Bay. A compulsory kit list must be carried. Entries include live GPS tracking, a finish buckle for the 100, medals for the 50 and 30, checkpoint support, drop bag access, a tested GPS file and a post-event meal at the Norwegian Church. Entry fees are listed for each distance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
