About the race
The Dragon Coastal Races are three coastal trail events that follow much of the Wales Coast Path and finish at the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay. Distances offered are:
- 100 mile from Rhossili Bay to Cardiff Bay
- 50 mile from Kenfig Nature Reserve to Cardiff Bay
- 50 km from Ogmore by Sea to Cardiff Bay
Routes use clear, mostly non-technical trails and coastal paths, with varied terrain including golden beaches, steep sand dunes, shifting shingle, rocky shorelines and forest singletrack. The 100 mile route also includes long inland forest sections with singletrack and significant climbs, and the course total ascent is approximately 3056 metres. The 50 mile and 50 km routes have approximately 1073 metres and 831 metres of ascent respectively. Ascent figures are approximate and may change if the coast path or forestry works force route adjustments.
The route is waymarked with Wales Coast Path signs plus additional running arrows and reflective tape where the route leaves the coast path. An interactive map and GPS file are available. There are checkpoints supplying sweet and savoury snacks and hot and cold drinks: 11 checkpoints for the 100 mile, 7 for the 50 mile and 4 for the 50 km. The 100 mile entrants have access to one drop bag at Pyle. Cut off times operate at checkpoints for safety and are non-negotiable.
Logistics notes include linear-route transport options with coach services from Cardiff Bay to start locations for those who book the option. Entry fees, transport fares and event merchandise prices are published for each distance. A compulsory kit list must be carried and is non-negotiable regardless of weather.
