About the race
The Dark Downs are a set of night trail races through the South Downs National Park, held on Saturday 3 October 2026 with Plumpton Racecourse, Lewes, as the start and finish location. The event uses fully marked routes with high-visibility reflective signage and regular, stocked aid stations. The South Downs hold a Dark Sky Reserve award, so night-time views are a noted feature of the location.
Distances on the day include:
- 20.6 miles single loop, about 2400 ft ascent and descent, 99% trail, mandatory GPS tracker included.
- 50 km loop, about 4400 ft ascent and descent, 95% trail, four aid stations, free overnight camping, GPS tracking and chip timing included.
- 13.4 miles half marathon, about 1600 ft ascent and descent, 99% trail, live chip timing.
Entry is on a first come, first served basis with no qualifying standard required. Minimum age for entries is 20 years. Permits are granted through the ARC (permits ARC/26/0735, ARC/26/0736, ARC/26/0737 as listed). The organiser offers a 50% refund up to 27 July 2026; after that date refunds are not normally given except for pregnancy, and deferral or transfer options are available with specified time limits and possible fees.
