The Cross Fell Race for GNAAS
The Cross Fell Race is a fell running event located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This FRA-registered race follows a 24 km route with a total ascent of 680 m. The course is designed as a lasso loop that starts in the village of Garrigill and takes participants to the summit of Cross Fell, the highest peak in the Pennines, as well as the source of the River Tees.
The terrain utilizes the Pennine Way and established bridle paths. The route is fully marshalled, and participants must adhere to FRA regulations regarding mandatory equipment. Runners are required to carry full body cover with taped seams, a hat, gloves, a map, a compass, and a whistle. A strict cut-off time is enforced at the second checkpoint.
Registration and race headquarters are located at the Garrigill village hall. The facility provides changing rooms, showers, and toilets for participants. Post-race refreshments are provided to all runners, and prizes are awarded to winners in various age categories and for teams of three. Parking is managed by marshals, with instructions to avoid residential areas and the village green.
This event is organized by local volunteers to support the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) and the Garrigill Village Hall. To participate, runners must be at least 18 years old on the day of the event. Dogs are not permitted on the course. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
