The Cross Fell Race for GNAAS
The Cross Fell Race for GNAAS is the sixth running of an FRA-registered fell race, held in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty around Garrigill. The route is a roughly 24 km lasso taking in the summit of Cross Fell and the source of the River Tees, with about 680 m of climb and extensive views across Eden Valley toward the Lake District and Scotland. The course uses sections of the Pennine Way and local bridle paths and is fully marshalled.
Race administration is based at the village hall in Garrigill. Facilities at the village include a pub (reopening soon), post office/shop, B&B, garage (no fuel) and public toilets; changing, shower and toilet facilities are available at the hall. Parking must follow marshal directions and must not use the village green or block resident driveways. Dogs are not permitted. A strict cut-off applies at the second checkpoint; that checkpoint also serves as the bad-weather return point if required.
The event is organised by local volunteers and entry fees are donated to the Langwathby Air Ambulance (GNAAS) and Garrigill Village Hall. Entry details state a minimum age of 18 on the day; entries open 1 December 2025 and close 4 July 2026. On-the-day entry is allowed for an additional fee. Runners must follow FRA rules and carry required kit, including full body cover (taped seams), hat, gloves, map, compass and whistle. Refreshments are provided free to participants after the race; others may purchase them with funds going to the designated charities. Prizes are awarded by age category and for teams.
