Event Overview

The Cheviots Challenge is a long-distance trail event held in the Northumberland National Park. Now in its 44th year, the event is organized to raise funds for the Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team. The event starts and finishes at the Rose and Thistle Inn in Alwinton and takes participants through the landscapes of Upper Coquetdale and the Cheviot Hills.

The featured route for this event is:

  • 22 miles (approximately 35 km) with over 4265 feet of ascent and 3400 feet of descent.

Course and Navigation

The route is marked with tape and staffed by marshals at key points, though participants are responsible for their own navigation. There are numerous checkpoints along the course that must be visited. A feeding station with drinks is located where the long and short routes diverge. The course must be completed within a 10-hour time limit.

Equipment and Safety

Participants must carry mandatory kit at all times, which includes:

  • Appropriate footwear (walking boots or fell running shoes).
  • Waterproof top and trousers and a spare fleece.
  • A map, compass, and the knowledge to use them.
  • A functioning torch, whistle, first aid kit, and survival (bivi) bag.
  • Reserve food and water.

First aid is available at staffed checkpoints and the start/finish area, supported by paramedics and Mountain Rescue vehicles.

Participation and Awards

The event is open to up to 300 runners. All finishers receive a bespoke medal and a race memento. Complimentary snacks are provided at the end of the race. Prizes are awarded for the first three male and female finishers in the senior category, and for the first finishers in age groups ranging from 40 to 70 plus. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
