About the race
The Cheviots Challenge long route is an annual trail event organised to raise funds for the Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team. The 45th edition takes place on 04 September 2027 and starts and finishes at the Rose and Thistle Inn in Alwinton, Morpeth, Northumberland. Trail Outlaws are working with the organisers to stage the event as both a competitive race and a personal challenge, and the route may be completed as a walk or as a running race.
The 'Terry Lynn' long route is approximately 22 miles with over 4,265 feet of ascent and passes through Upper Coquetdale and the Cheviot Hills. The course will be marked and taped, with marshals at key points and numerous checkpoints that must be visited before their cut off times. Where the long and short routes split there will be a feeding station offering drinks. The race must be completed within 10 hours and competitors are responsible for their own navigation.
Mandatory kit includes appropriate footwear for the terrain, waterproof top and trousers, a spare warm layer, a functioning torch and whistle, a basic first aid kit, a map and compass, a survival bivi bag and reserve food and drink. Entries include a complimentary snack at the finish; all finishers receive a bespoke medal. Free parking and free digital photography are provided and a race t-shirt is available to purchase. First aid is available at staffed checkpoints and at the start/finish area, which will include a paramedic and Mountain Rescue ambulance. There are male and female prizes across age categories.
