The Blade 5K and 1 Mile Walk
The Blade 5K and 1 Mile Walk is a fundraising running and walking event held in person at the College of Saint Mary campus in Omaha on July 11, 2026, with a virtual option for participants elsewhere. The event program also includes short indoor track runs for young children.
Distances and youth events:
- 3.1 Miles 5K run, available in person and virtually
- 1 Mile 1 Mile walk, available in person and virtually
- 50 meters Kids run for ages 2 to 4, indoor track
- 200 meters Kids run for ages 5 to 8, indoor track
The event began in 2018 as a grassroots fundraiser to cover the cost of a running blade for an amputee who wanted to return to running. It obtained 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2019 and maintains a board with a nomination process to distribute race proceeds to individuals who need non covered specialized devices.
Since 2020 the event has offered a virtual format in addition to the in person race. Proceeds have helped recipients obtain a range of devices and equipment, including running blades, prosthetic components, specialized wheelchairs, a tandem bicycle, and other adaptive attachments. The stated focus is helping people with limb difference regain active lifestyles and supporting the amputee community in the Midwest.
