The Barley Chase
The Barley Chase is a USATF certified 5K and 10K road race held in Newport, NC on October 18, 2026. The course starts and finishes at Shortway Brewing Co. and meanders through the heart of Newport.
The event offers the following distances:
- 5K - $35.00
- 10K - $40.00
Participants receive a t-shirt, a finisher medal, and two post-run pints at the after party; all participants are subject to an ID check. T-shirt size is not guaranteed for registrations after August 31. The race is held in conjunction with Shortway Brewing Company’s anniversary party and benefits Bread & Barley, a 501(c)(3) organization; proceeds are used to meet local community needs.
Awards are given to the overall top three males and females and to the top three finishers in each age division for both males and females. Age divisions: 14 & under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 & above. Water stations are located at the halfway point of each course.
Packet pickup is available Saturday, October 17, 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Shortway Brewing Co., or the morning of the race starting at 8:00 AM at the registration table behind the brewery on Haskett St. Online registration may close when the race sells out; a waitlist opens once the race is full and operates on a first come, first served basis with 24 hours to accept an offered spot. Early bird pricing runs through June 30, after which fees increase by $5. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
