The 16 Hour Lock-In : Carolina Beach State Park
The 16 Hour Lock-In is a timed endurance event held at Carolina Beach State Park. Participants have 16 hours to complete a 4.5-mile loop as many times as they choose. The format is no DNF, so athletes with different goals and paces share the same course.
The park is a coastal maritime forest with groomed, wide and relatively flat trails. The loop is well marked and includes two hills totaling about 100 feet of climb per loop. Surfaces include dirt, sand, pine straw, roots and a short section of road with grass available alongside. Each loop returns to the Start/Finish area for access to personal gear, bathrooms and the aid station.
The aid station provides water, Tailwind and a variety of salty, sweet and savory snacks, plus two hot meals during the event. The race is cup free so all participants must bring a refillable hydration vessel. Headlamps are required for participants who will be on course after dusk. The park gate closes at 7pm; anyone remaining must be a registered camper or arrange pickup outside the park.
Camping options are limited. The event offers 30 group campsites adjacent to the course with a paid upgrade and primitive facilities. The state park family campground is nearby and available by separate reservation.
