Taming of the Slough Adventure Triathlon
Taming of the Slough is an adventure triathlon held in Moline, IL at the Bass Street YMCA on Saturday, September 12, 2026. The event combines paddling, mountain biking, and running along the Mississippi River and Sylvan Slough. Online registration closes Thursday, September 10. Packet pickup occurs the evening before at Active Endeavors.
Categories include Masters (ages 55+), Elite (racing kayaks), Individual (ages 18+), Youth (ages 12–17), 2-person teams, 3-person teams, and a Corporate Adventure Challenge. Trophies are awarded to top finishers in individual and relay categories and to the Corporate Challenge winner. A post-race awards ceremony and party with food and beverage follows the race.
Equipment must be provided by each racer; bike helmets and personal flotation devices are required. Participants using racing kayaks should register in the Elite category. Canoes and kayaks are available for rental through regional outfitters but must be reserved prior to the event; rentals are not available at launch locations on race day.
The course includes the following legs:
- Paddle: 2.5 miles in Sylvan Slough
- Mountain bike: 7.5 miles total, about 5 miles off road
- Run: across the I 74 Bridge
Tune Up practice sessions on the paddle and bike courses are scheduled in the evenings before the event and are free to attend. Detailed route maps are provided by the organizer. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
