Taming of the Slough Adventure Triathlon : Downtown Moline, IL
River Action presents the 21st annual Taming of the Slough Adventure Triathlon on September 12, 2026, in downtown Moline, Illinois. The event combines paddling, mountain biking, and a short road run, with transitions located at the foot of 17th Street outside the Bass Street YMCA.
Course components include:
- 2.5 miles paddle through the Sylvan Slough by kayak, canoe, or SUP
- 7.5 miles bike including about 2.5 miles paved and 5 miles off-road on Sylvan Island single-track
- 2 miles run over the I-74 Bridge
Competitors may enter as individuals in age divisions (Elite, Adult, Masters, Youth), as a 2-person team, a 3-person relay, or in the Corporate Adventure Challenge competing for THE ROCK, a traveling trophy. Chip timing is used; teams and relays hand off chips in the transition area.
Mandatory equipment includes bike helmets and personal flotation devices. Participants must provide their own bicycles and watercrafts; kayak rentals are available through local outfitters. Tune-Up training sessions are offered in advance and are free for the public; participants are asked to bring their own boats when possible.
Volunteers are needed on race day to assist with registration, launching, transitions, equipment monitoring, and course marshaling at Bass Street Landing. All proceeds support River Action, a nonprofit focused on the Mississippi River and its riverfront. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
