Swing the Gates
Swing the Gates takes place at Deception Pass State Park in Oak Harbor, Washington. This event offers participants the opportunity to explore the local landscape through different race formats, including a traditional run and a team-based challenge. Participants should note that a Discover Pass is required for vehicle parking within the state park grounds.
The event features several participation options:
- 10K Team Scavenger Hunt: A trail race for teams of up to four people involving clues and navigation.
- 5K Fun Run: A course held primarily on paved surfaces with a steep incline at the start.
- Kid's Race: A dedicated short-distance event for children.
The 10K Team Scavenger Hunt is an unsupported trail race on unpaved surfaces. Teams navigate the park to solve challenges that reveal the course. The route includes approximately 1200 feet of elevation gain, though total distance and elevation vary based on the team's navigation. Participants must carry their own water and snacks. The final clue station concludes in the early afternoon, at which point all teams must return to the finish.
The 5K Fun Run is open to runners and walkers of all ages. The course features 400 feet of elevation gain. Strollers and leashed dogs are permitted on this route. The event utilizes a cup-less aid station, requiring participants to bring their own water bottles or cups. For both main events, top finishers in various categories receive prizes.
