Trail Races in the North York Moors
The Swainby Sweep features circular trail races set within the North York Moors National Park. Starting and finishing at Swainby Village Hall near Northallerton, the routes transition through various environments including moorland, forest tracks, and rugged uplands. Participants traverse sections of the Cleveland Way and pass local landmarks such as Cod Beck and Oak Dale Reservoirs, Scarth Wood and Whorlton Moors, and Black Hambleton.
Runners can choose from two distance options:
- 7 miles
- 16 miles
The terrain consists primarily of bridalways and footpaths with some muddy forest tracks and short sections on minor roads. Both courses are fully marked and supported by marshals. The event provides water and feed stations at regular checkpoints along the route. For navigation, participants can also access printed route descriptions and downloadable GPS files.
Logistical support includes on-site car parking at the race headquarters and medical provision. All participants receive a goodie bag that includes a race medal. Trophies are awarded to the first three male and female finishers overall, as well as the top three in specific age categories. This event does not permit participants to run with dogs due to livestock on the route and specific athletic regulations. A portion of the entry fee is donated to the North York Moors National Park and the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
