About the race
Surrey Backyard Ultra is a timed loop event held September 19-20, 2026 at Fleetwood Park - Picnic Shelters, west of the playground in Surrey, BC. Entry is free and the format follows the Backyard Ultra standard: runners must complete a single loop of 6.706 km within each hour, repeatedly, until only one runner remains.
At the hourly whistle runners must be in the starting chute and begin immediately or face disqualification. The last remaining runner must complete one final solo loop. Runners may not leave the course during a loop except for bathroom breaks. For 2026, each completed lap earns a ticket for gear prize draws from Arc'teryx Coquitlam Centre, and Arc'teryx will award a pair of Sylan 2 trail shoes to the runner who finishes last (DFL).
Participants must be at least 18 years old. Additional rules include no littering, no storing personal food or supplies along the course, and maintaining respectful conduct and fair play. The route uses forested trail and pavement within Fleetwood Park, is non-technical, and has about 85 m of elevation change. Course corners will be marked; organizers advise downloading the course from the RunGo app or the provided Strava route and to backtrack to the last marker if disoriented.
This is a self-supported event with limited neutral support (basic food, water, coffee, tea). Mandatory gear includes a front light and reflective back gear; a GPS unit with the route is strongly recommended and a hydration pack is encouraged. Participants are expected to bring sufficient hydration, nutrition, clothing, and a first-aid kit. Safety, navigation, and well-being remain the responsibility of each participant; emergency procedures and bail-out instructions are provided.
