Superior Nightmare 5K

Superior Nightmare 5K - Young Athletes Foundation

The Superior Nightmare is an annual Halloween themed 5K held in October in Superior, Wisconsin and presented by the Young Athletes Foundation. The event is coordinated with the citys Superior Spooktacular and features family friendly spooky elements and a costume atmosphere.

The course uses the area around Wessman Arena and crosses into Superior; a course map is provided for participants. Packet pickup is available in the days leading up to the race and in-person registration is accepted on race day as space allows. Capacity for the event is limited to 750 participants and registration is handled on a first come, first served basis.

The event includes a costume contest with categories for individuals, groups, and kids; contest entries are photographed near the start and winners are selected by public vote on social media. All adult entrants receive a commemorative full zip jacket and youth entrants receive a hooded sweatshirt. Participants may also purchase commemorative socks and receive a free drink ticket redeemable at the official post race gathering hosted in Superior.

A free Spider Dash for ages 14 and under takes place on the track outside Wessman Arena shortly after the main race and allow kids to run multiple heats as space permits. Race rules prohibit pets, bicycles, handcycles, roller skis, inline skates, and unregistered participants on the course; baby joggers and strollers are permitted but must start in the back of the corral. Adaptive athletes are encouraged to participate and must follow wheelchair and adaptive program guidance and contact race staff before registering so accommodations can be arranged.

Proceeds support YAF programs. Since 1990 the Young Athletes Foundation has contributed more than $1.8 million to local youth running programs, grants, scholarships, and free running shoes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
