Superior Nightmare 5K : Young Athletes Foundation
The Superior Nightmare 5K is an annual October road race held in Superior, WI that combines a 5 kilometer community run with Halloween-themed activities. The event is organized by the Young Athletes Foundation and is described as a family-friendly costume race coordinated with the city’s Superior Spooktacular.
Participants receive event apparel as part of their entry: a commemorative full-zip jacket for adults and a hooded sweatshirt for youth. All participants also receive a free drink ticket for the official post-race party at Aces on 29th; commemorative socks are available for purchase for $7. The race has a capacity limit of 750 participants and registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
A race day costume contest features multiple categories such as individual, group, and kids, with prizes awarded to winners chosen by public vote on Facebook. There is a separate Spider Dash kids’ program on the track outside Wessman Arena that is free for ages 14 and under and runs continuously so children can join as space allows.
Packet pickup is available on the Friday and Saturday prior to the race at Grandma’s Marathon Office and at Wessman Arena. Race rules prohibit pets, bicycles, motor vehicles, handcycles, roller skis, inline skates, and unregistered participants; baby joggers and strollers must start in the back of the corral. Road closures will affect parts of Catlin Avenue, Hammond Avenue, and North 21st Street, and free parking is available at Wessman Arena, Superior High School, and Northern Lights Elementary.
Proceeds and participation support the Young Athletes Foundation, which funds youth running programs, grants, scholarships, and a free running shoe program; the YAF has contributed more than $1.8 million to the community since 1990. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
