Sunshine Festival July 4th 5k & 1 mile
The Sunshine Festival 5k & 1 mile is an annual running event held on Saint Simons Island, Georgia. Now in its 42nd year, the event takes place on Independence Day and features several race options:
- 5k
- 1 Mile
- Adaptive Athlete 5k
The 5k follows a USTAF certified route, starting and finishing at Saint Simons Park / Kings Park near the basketball courts. The starting line is self-seeded into ten different sections based on expected pace per mile, ranging from a 5-6 minute pace to walking. A dedicated push-rim division for adaptive athletes begins shortly before the main field. The 1 mile fun run follows a portion of the same course, including a turnaround on Magnolia Avenue.
Both the 5k and 1 mile races are chip-timed, with timing mats located at the start and finish lines. All participants who complete their respective courses while wearing an official bib receive a finisher medal. On-site amenities include multiple bathroom locations at Mallery Park and the Village Pier Casino, as well as various food and beverage stations providing water, fruit, and snacks.
Registration is available in advance and includes an option for walk-up registration on July 3rd; however, there are no registrations allowed on the day of the race. Participants may pick up their packets on July 3rd or the morning of July 4th. Strollers are permitted on the course, though dogs are not allowed due to safety and insurance regulations.
