Sun Mountain 50M, 50K & 25K : Winthrop, WA
The Sun Mountain races are point to point trail events on the sunnyside of the North Cascades, held May 16 and 17, 2026, with a lakeside finish at Big Twin Lake Resort Campground. Courses run above the Methow and Twisp River valleys on the edge of the Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness and cross ancestral lands of the sp̓aƛ̓mul̓əxʷəxʷ (Methow), Syilx (Okanagan), Nłeʔkepmx Tmíxʷ (Nlaka’pamux), the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, and the Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla nations.
Course highlights include open meadows of wildflowers, old growth forest, ridgetop views of snow capped peaks, mostly gradual smooth runnable trails, and some steep climbs. Each route begins with about a mile of gravel road and ends with just under a mile of paved rural road to the finish. The 50M also includes a 2.7 mile paved section between aid stations. Early miles of the 50M have bridgeless creek crossings where feet may get wet.
Course marking uses pink and black checkered ribbons plus arrow signs; confidence ribbons appear frequently. Drop bags are allowed at specified aid stations. Crew access on course is limited; shuttles are mandatory from Big Twin to all starts and limited crew shuttles serve select aid stations for 50M and 50K. Dogs are not allowed on the race course; leashed dogs are allowed at the finish area. Entry fees for members of the listed tribes are waived.
