Sun Mountain 50M/50K/25K
The Sun Mountain races are trail ultramarathons held in the Methow Valley near Winthrop, WA on May 1 and 2, 2027. Routes run on the sunnyside of the North Cascades near the Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness and pass through meadows, old growth forest, ridgelines and the Moccasin Lake Ranch property. Runners can expect fields of wildflowers, views of snow capped peaks, mostly gradual and smooth trails, and some steep climbs and downhills.
The event uses a lakeside start and finish area at Big Twin Lake Resort Campground. Participants are shuttled to the start from Big Twin and the finish area hosts a post race pizza party with food and beverages. Camping is available at Big Twin with premium and basic site options and includes amenities such as a swimming dock, boat rentals, coin showers and a camp store.
The three distances are:
- 50 Mile roughly 8200 ft elevation gain, 6 aid stations, 15+ hour cutoff
- 50K roughly 5000 ft elevation gain, 4 aid stations, 13+ hour cutoff
- 25K roughly 2300 ft elevation gain, 2 aid stations, 6+ hour cutoff
Courses mix single track, ranch roads and some low traffic paved sections. Dogs are not allowed on the race course but leashed dogs are permitted at the Big Twin finish. These races take place on the ancestral lands of local Confederated Tribes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
