Cutthroat Classic
The Cutthroat Classic is a high alpine singletrack trail run through the North Cascades that follows the Pacific Crest Trail over Cutthroat Pass. The total course length is 10.5 miles. The route begins at Rainy Pass at 4,870 feet, climbs to Cutthroat Pass at 6,835 feet, then descends to Cutthroat Lake and continues downhill to the Cutthroat Creek Trailhead at 4,480 feet. The descent from the pass includes many switchbacks on grades of about five to ten percent.
Runners self-seed into six start waves; the first wave is intended for elite runners. Shuttles run between the start area and the finish area and limited parking is available at both trailheads. A Northwest Forest Pass is required for parking and a one day pass may be purchased at the Rainy Pass and Cutthroat trailheads.
There is one aid station at mile seven offering energy chews, water, and sport drink mix; aid station supplies are packed in by horseback so runners are encouraged to carry personal fuel. The event is cupless; runners are expected to carry a bottle, collapsible cup, or hydration pack for refills. HydraPak is listed as a sustainable racing partner and refillable SpeedCups are available at bib pickup.
Methow Trails is a nonprofit and event income supports year round trail operations in the Methow Valley. Registration rules include no refunds, exchanges, transfers, or rollovers after August 1st and fees apply for refunds and transfers before that date. Kids 17 and under may race free but must register and sign an online waiver. Lunches are provided and participants over 21 receive one pint from a local brewery. Divisions are organized by age from 17 and under through 70 plus. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
