Sugar Cane Cut
The Sugar Cane Cut is an elimination running event held on the sealed, paved shared pathways of Queens Park in East Mackay, Queensland. Runners complete repeated laps of a fast 1.6 km loop beneath the park's historic fig and banyan tree canopy, with a central lawn area for recovery and crew support.
The format combines a backyard ultra with a beep test-style progressive pace. The race uses a mass start for every remaining lap. Lap 1 begins with a relaxed time allowance; after each completed lap the allowed time shortens and the required pace increases. Finish a lap inside the allotted time to earn a rest window and return for the next start. If the countdown expires before a runner crosses the timing mat, their race ends and their official result is the number of complete laps finished.
Event entries are capped at 150 competitors. Prize categories include last standing male and female cash prizes and junior awards, and intermittent spot prizes and milestone rewards are awarded throughout the day. A fixed portion of each entry fee is directed to MND Queensland to support care and services for people living with motor neurone disease. Competitors are expected to be self-sufficient for hydration and nutrition and to follow site rules and race etiquette. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
