The 50K includes a specific challenge called the Quest of the Six Stones. Participants on that route receive a Protection Stone at the start and must collect six Sacred Stones placed at aid stations. A handcrafted Blood Book is available for purchase to hold the stones and a finisher medal made by BlueGill Pottery; each pottery medal is unique.
The course begins near the Visitor Center and follows the Bypass Trail into the Stone Mountain Loop, descends to Wolf Creek, and joins the Mountain-to-Sea Trail. The route includes an ascent of 300 stairs and features rock, roots, and technical trail sections. Approximate elevation gain is 1,530 ft per loop. Trails are marked with red ribbons and yellow arrows. Conditions may include ice, fog, and mud.
There are five aid stations, two manned and three unmanned; each station holds a Stone Token. Aid station provisions include items such as pickles, bacon, candy, cereal, fruit, water, Tailwind, and soda. First aid is provided on course. Event rules include no dogs, no strollers, trekking poles allowed, bibs worn on the front, no refunds for weather, and a time limit of 10 hours.
