Path of Trials in Roaring Gap
The Stone Mountain Massacre is an off-road running event held in the landscape of Stone Mountain in Roaring Gap, North Carolina. Organized by Dirty Wolf Ultras, the race takes place on a course featuring a mix of rock, roots, and varied terrain. Participants follow a route that begins near the Visitor Center and utilizes the Bypass Trail, the Stone Mountain Loop, and the Mountain-to-Sea Trail. The course includes an ascent of the 300 Stairs of Judgment and a descent to Wolf Creek, with each loop offering approximately 1,530 feet of elevation gain.
The event offers three distinct distances to accommodate different levels of endurance:
- 50K
- 25K
- 8 Miler
Runners in the 50K category participate in a specific activity known as the Quest of the Six Stones. These participants receive a Protection Stone at the start and must collect five additional sacred stones located at various aid stations along the course. These stones include Onyx, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, and Diamond tokens. Those who complete this distance can obtain a handcrafted "Blood Book" from BlueGill Pottery to house their collected stones and finisher's medal.
The course is marked with red ribbons and yellow arrows. Five aid stations are positioned throughout the route, consisting of two manned and three unmanned locations. These stations provide water, Tailwind, soda, and a selection of food including fruit, cereal, candy, bacon, and pickles. There is a total time limit of 10 hours for the event. All finishers receive a unique, handmade pottery medal. Trekking poles are permitted, but dogs and strollers are not allowed on the course.
