Steel City Human vs Horse
Steel City Human vs Horse is a simultaneous trail running and equestrian endurance event held July 31, 2027 at Hillman State Park near Pittsburgh, PA, with the venue listed in Burgettstown. Runners and riders share the same trails in parallel competitions and will attend a pre-race safety meeting covering trail etiquette.
The event is part of a three day endurance festival that includes a Ride and Tie event the day before and an equathon the day after. Free primitive camping is available for horses and people from Thursday through Sunday in a large flat open field.
Distances offered for both runners and riders include:
- Half Marathon (13 mile intro ride)
- 50k (30 mile limited distance)
- 50M
Additional options include a 50M runner relay for teams of 2 to 5, exchanges after loops and an exchange point midway through the 18 mile loop, and limited to 10 teams. Hikers are welcome in the Half Marathon and 50k distances. The equestrian competition follows American Endurance Ride Conference rules and nonmember riders in certain divisions must obtain a one day AERC membership.
The trail course combines single track, gravel road, and grassy meadow. Aid stations are placed approximately every 5 to 7 miles. Time cutoff windows are specified for runner and rider divisions and the event proceeds rain or shine with reroutes to roads if trail conditions would cause damage.
