Stanhope Trail Races
The Stanhope Trail Races offer trail running experiences through the landscape of the North East of England. Based at the Stanhope Showground in County Durham, the event takes participants into the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and UNESCO Global Geopark. The terrain includes moorlands, woods, and upland rivers, moving away from urban gravel tracks and onto more technical routes.
The event features two distinct distances:
- 10k + (approximately 7 miles with 1,200ft of elevation)
- 15 miles (approximately 14.6 miles with 1,887ft of elevation)
The race starts and finishes at Unthank Park in Stanhope. The routes are fully waymarked and marshalled, with feed stations located at 4.5 miles and 9 miles. All participants receive a bespoke memento upon completion, and prizes are awarded to top finishers in various age categories from Senior to over 70.
Participants are required to carry mandatory kit, which may include full body cover, a waterproof jacket and trousers, a hat, gloves, an emergency blanket or survival bag, and their own food and water. As this is an eco-friendly event, no disposable plastic cups are provided. The organizers also collect pre-loved running kit for an up-cycling scheme. On-site facilities at the showground include parking, medical cover, and post-race refreshments. Registration occurs at the venue on the morning of the event.
