Murder Mile - Wharfedale Harriers
The Murder Mile is an uphill road race held on Brunthwaite Lane in Silsden (BD20 0QA). The advertised distance is 1 mile with a climb of 485 ft. The course starts by the bridge at the bottom of Brunthwaite Lane, climbs with little respite, then turns a corner and finishes where the road meets Light Bank Lane.
The event includes race categories for U9, U12, U14, U17, U21 and seniors. Minimum age is 6 years unaccompanied or 5 years if accompanied by an adult. Entry fees are listed as Juniors £2 and Seniors £5. Parking is charged at £3 and registration and parking are organised in a field just before the bridge; a grassy track between houses leads from the field toward the village green and a short path leads to the start area.
Competitors are asked to assemble on the village green before the race and to allow faster runners to move to the front when directed, with slower runners toward the back. Prizes are awarded to the first three men and first three women, first vets in age bands 40, 50, 60 and 70, first U21 male and female, and first three boys and girls in each junior age group. Course records are 6:24 for men (2014) and 8:03 for women (2019). Past results are maintained for multiple years. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
