Squatchapple

Squatchapple is a trail race at South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, NJ on March 6, 2027. The event offers four looped-distance options and supports the South Mountain Conservancy; Sassquad Trail Runners have donated over $20,000 to the Conservancy since 2018. Capacity is capped at 400 participants and the event has sold out the last four years.

The course uses three loops that all start and finish at the Tulip Springs / Boy Scout area. Distances are formed by repeating loops in a specific order; only the 50M to 50K and 50K to 20M drop-downs are allowed. The route combines carriage roads and technical singletrack with rocks and roots.

  • 11 miles (1,185 ft elevation gain)
  • 20 miles (2,155 ft elevation gain)
  • 50K (3,860 ft elevation gain)
  • 50 miles (5,790 ft elevation gain)

Loop details: the 4-mile Pink Loop is mostly carriage roads with one major climb and a 200+ ft rocky descent; the 5.5-mile Checkered Loop is carriage-road heavy but includes a steep 300 ft climb on the Lenape Trail; the 7-mile Blue Loop is more technical, includes two road crossings, and mixes singletrack, carriage roads, and a short road section. The course is marked with colored ribbons.

The start/finish area houses the only aid station on course, stocked with water, Skratch, hot food, snacks including gluten-free and vegan options, first aid and AED, private changing tents, and a quiet Jackalope Tent. Trekking poles are allowed; sturdy trail shoes are recommended. Participants over 60 and athletes with disabilities may have a guide or pacer at any time; other pacers must be preregistered. There are no refunds; limited deferral options and specific volunteer-deferral policies apply. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
