Squatchapple - West Orange, NJ

Squatchapple takes place on March 7, 2026 at the South Mountain Reservation with the start/finish at the Tulip Springs Trailhead on Cherry Lane in West Orange, NJ. Distances offered:

Course and race format

The course uses three loops that all start and finish at the Tulip Springs Trailhead: a 4 mile, a 5.5 mile and a 7 mile loop. Participants must complete the loops in the listed order. The 4 mile Turtleback Loop has about 370 ft gain and is roughly 75% carriage road, 25% singletrack. The 5.5 mile Locust Grove Loop has about 600 ft gain, mostly carriage roads with one steep technical Lenape climb. The 7 mile Mayapple Loop has about 960 ft gain, a mix of singletrack, road and carriage roads, and includes two road crossings that must be crossed legally at the crosswalk. Each race is composed of specific loop combinations; total elevation gains are listed as 5,790 ft for the 50 miler, 3,860 ft for the 50K, 2,155 ft for the 20 miler, and 1,185 ft for the 11 miler.

Logistics, support and policies

The Tulip Springs Trailhead offers a large parking lot, a covered pavilion for aid and check-in, and portajohns at the start/finish and at loop midpoints. The aid station will provide traditional ultra food plus vegan and gluten-free options. Pacers or guides are allowed for participants over age 60 and for athletes with disabilities at any time; other pacers require prior approval. Dogs are not permitted. The event does not offer refunds; deferral options and volunteer-based deferrals are described by the organizer.
