Squatchapple - South Mountain Reservation, West Orange, NJ
Squatchapple is a trail race held at the Tulip Springs / Boy Scout area in the South Mountain Reservation. The event uses three looped courses of 4 miles, 5.5 miles, and 7 miles that start and finish at the same trailhead. Runners and hikers complete combinations of these loops in a set order to reach their chosen distance.

Each loop has distinct terrain and marking colors. The 4 mile Pink loop is mostly carriage roads with some singletrack and a steep rocky descent. The 5.5 mile Checkered loop is mostly carriage roads with one steep, rocky climb. The 7 mile Blue loop is more technical and includes two road crossings at marked crosswalks. The course is marked with colored ribbons for each loop.
Reported elevation gains by distance are: 1,185 ft for 11 miles, 2,155 ft for 20 miles, 3,860 ft for 50K, and 5,790 ft for the 50 mile distance. The organizers note early spring conditions can be muddy and variable; sturdy lugged trail shoes and trekking poles are commonly recommended. Aid is provided at the start/finish area on each loop and includes water, electrolyte drink, snacks, and a range of gluten free and vegan options.
