Event Overview
The 29th Annual Sprint for Life is a community athletic event held in Houston to benefit the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program at MD Anderson. Hosted by the Department of Gynecologic Oncology and Reproductive Medicine, the event serves to raise funds for medical research and increase public awareness regarding the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Since its inception in 1998, the program has raised more than $5.8 million to support the development of new diagnostic methods and targeted therapies.
The event takes place at Helix Park within The Medical Center near the MD Anderson campus. Participants include cancer survivors, their families, MD Anderson employees, and local businesses. The program offers multiple participation formats:
- Sprint for Life 5K (Run/Walk)
- Sprint for Sprouts (Kids' Run)
Participation and Impact
The event features a post-race party held on the MD Anderson Prairie, which includes a survivors' stage and team photo opportunities. Proceeds from the registration and donations support research aimed at understanding the causes of ovarian cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, this disease is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers, often due to the lack of early detection tests.
The first 100 ovarian cancer survivors and one caregiver are eligible for complimentary registration through a partnership with Ovarcome. The course is situated at 7255 Helix Park Avenue. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
