Spire Ultra
The Spire Ultra is a 33 miles trail race taking place around Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire. The route largely follows the Chesterfield Round Walk, which circles the town known for its Crooked Spire, and moves through high moorland, ancient woodland, reservoirs, rolling farmland and restored former mining areas.
The course is largely unmarked; organisers provide route notes and downloadable GPX files and mark a few trickier navigation sections. Some Chesterfield Round waymarks appear on the route. Runners are advised to carry a paper map as a back up and to assist with navigation.
Registration is at North Wingfield Community Resource Centre, Whiteleas Avenue, North Wingfield S42 5PW. Free car parking is available at the centre and on the adjoining estate roads. The event has a nine hour time limit.
Checkpoints are located at Spitewinter (6 miles), Ladywood (10.5 miles), Barlow (15 miles), Hundall (19 miles), Brimington (22 miles) and Sutton Scarsdale (27 miles). Every checkpoint supplies water and checkpoints 2, 4 and 6 also provide both sweet and savoury food. There is medic cover on the course and at race headquarters.
Every finisher receives a special 10th anniversary memento. Prizes are awarded to the first male and first female finishers. The event is organised by First Light Adventure. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
