Spire Ultra : 33 mile trail race
The Spire Ultra is a trail race of 33 miles that follows much of the Chesterfield Round Walk, a waymarked route that circles the town. The course passes a variety of landscapes including high moorland, ancient woodland, reservoirs, rolling farmland and restored former mining areas. The route includes some Chesterfield Round waymarks but is largely unmarked; the organiser marks a few trickier navigation sections.
Organisers provide route notes and GPX files for participants. Runners are advised to carry a paper map as backup and to aid with navigation. The event operates a 9 hour time limit; to complete within that limit runners must meet the organiser's checkpoint cutoffs.
Registration is based at North Wingfield Community Resource Centre, Whiteleas Avenue, North Wingfield, S42 5PW. Free car parking is available at the centre and on the adjoining estate roads. Checkpoints on course offer water at every stop, with additional sweet and savoury food at selected checkpoints.
Checkpoints occur at Spitewinter (6 miles), Ladywood (10.5 miles), Barlow (15 miles), Hundall (19 miles), Brimington (22 miles) and Sutton Scarsdale (27 miles).
Every finisher will receive a special 10th anniversary memento. Prizes are awarded to the first male and first female finishers. Light refreshments are available at the finish and medic cover is provided on course and at race headquarters. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
