Spire Ultra
The Spire Ultra is a trail running event that follows a route largely based on the Chesterfield Round Walk. The course circles the town of Chesterfield, passing the landmark Crooked Spire. Moving through various landscapes, participants experience high moorland, reservoirs, and ancient woodland on the western edges, as well as rolling farmland and restored mining areas on the eastern fringes.
The race consists of a single distance:
- 33 miles
The course is largely unmarked, although specific markers are placed at a few complex navigation points. Runners are provided with route notes and GPX files to assist with wayfinding, and some existing Chesterfield Round waymarks are visible along the path. Participants may also carry their own paper maps.
The event features six checkpoints along the route. Every station provides water, while checkpoints 2, 4, and 6 also offer food options, including both sweet and savoury items. The event has a total time limit of 9 hours, and runners must depart the fourth checkpoint by a specific cutoff time to remain in the race.
Registration takes place at the North Wingfield Community Resource Centre, where free parking is available for participants. Every finisher receives a special 10th anniversary memento, and prizes are awarded to the first male and female finishers. Medical cover is present at the race headquarters and throughout the course.
