Event
The Spire Ultra is a 33-mile trail race around Chesterfield and the surrounding countryside. The 2026 edition is the tenth running of the event. The route largely follows the Chesterfield Round Walk and passes high moorland, ancient woodland, reservoirs, rolling farmland, and restored former mining areas, offering varied terrain across the course. The race is held under permit from the Association of Running Clubs.
Course and support
There are six checkpoints on the route: four are drinks only and two provide food and drink, including sweet and savoury options. The trickier sections carry race signage; for much of the route participants rely on map, GPS, route notes, and the Chesterfield Round waymarks. Medic cover is provided on the course and at race headquarters. Finishers receive a special anniversary memento and light refreshments are available at the community resource centre. Free car parking is available at the centre and on adjoining estate roads. The event has a nine-hour overall time limit and requires passage through Checkpoint 4 within five hours to remain on target. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
