Speewah Legend Foot Race
The Speewah Legend Foot Race takes place in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area near Kuranda. The event features trails through the Barron Gorge National Park, utilizing the Djina Wu track and traditional pathways originally used by the Djabugay people and early European pioneers. The course environment includes dense rainforest, mountain heath, and clear creeks.
Participants can choose from three distinct distances:
- 17 km - The longest route includes Smiths Track, Yalbogie Track, and a detour to Glacier Rock. It involves two crossings of Stoney Creek.
- 8 km - This course follows the Djina Wu Track, portions of Smiths Track, Gandal Wandun, and the Douglas Track.
- 4 km - A shorter loop consisting of paved sections, dirt roads, and single trail descending back to the finish line.
The event is held at the Speewah Campground, which offers facilities such as drinking water, picnic tables, gas barbecues, flushing toilets, and cold showers. Runners are required to be self-reliant as there are no water stations provided on the course. Recommended gear includes a hydration pack or bottle, race food, and a snake bandage.
The terrain varies from steep climbs to flowing downhill sections. Wildlife such as brush turkeys, cassowaries, and various forest mammals may be observed within the national park. The race concludes at the campground where post-event snacks and presentations take place. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
