Spearfish Canyon Half Marathon & 5K
The event is an annual fundraiser for Northern Hills Area CASA, serving eight counties of western South Dakota. The 40th edition is scheduled for July 11, 2026. Registrations are open and early bird discounts apply through June 30; pricing increases by $15 on July 1. No refunds are issued.

- Half marathon: point-to-point on Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway
- 5K: loop starting and ending at Spearfish City Park
The half marathon is a road race that begins near Savoy and follows Highway 14A along Spearfish Creek to Spearfish City Park. The course is USATF certified (SD16003BK). A time limit of 3 hours and 20 minutes applies. All half marathon finishers receive a participation medal. Overall awards are given to the top three male and female finishers; first place male and female awards are given in age groups 12-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+.
The 5K route passes through the campground and along the bike path to the Spearfish Canyon parking area before returning to the park. Overall awards go to the top three male and female finishers. Age group first place awards are given in categories 11 and under, 12-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80+ . The 5K is open to individual entrants only.
Packet pick-up is available Friday, July 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Northern Hills Area CASA at 741 N. 5th Street in Spearfish, and Saturday morning beginning at 5:30 a.m. at Spearfish City Park. A limited supply of commemorative shirts will be available at packet pick-up after the specified registration deadline. Discounted lodging rates are offered for participants at the Spearfish Holiday Inn. Official race timing is provided by Mangled Momentum.
