Race Overview

The Spearfish Canyon Half Marathon/5K is a fundraising event supporting abused and neglected children through the Northern Hills Area CASA Program. The 2026 edition will mark its 40th anniversary.

Distances

Participants can choose between two distances:

Half Marathon: A 13.1-mile road race.
5K: A 3.1-mile run/walk.

Course Details

The Half Marathon begins in Savoy at 7:00 AM and follows Highway 14A, the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, to Spearfish City Park. The course runs down a scenic byway alongside Spearfish Creek, featuring limestone canyon walls with trees. The course is a certified USATF course (SD16003BK). A time limit of 3 hours and 20 minutes is in place. Buses transport runners from the park to the starting point beginning at 5:30 AM, with the last bus leaving at 6:05 AM.

The 5K starts and ends in Spearfish City Park. The route goes through the campground, connects to a bike path leading to the Spearfish Canyon parking lot, and returns via the scenic byway and bike path back to the park.

Participant Information

Registration is open for the event on July 11, 2026. Early bird discounts are available until June 30, after which prices increase by $15 for both distances. A complimentary race shirt is included with registration if a size is selected by June 23. Limited shirts will be available for purchase at packet pick-up on July 10.

Half Marathon participants receive a participation medal. Awards are given to the overall top three male and female winners, and to the first-place male and female finisher in each age group (12-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+).

5K awards are given to the overall top three male and female winners, and to the first-place male and female finisher in each age group (11 and Under, 12-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80+). The 5K is open only to individuals; team registration is not available.
