About the race
The Black Hills 100 is an ultramarathon event held June 25-26, 2027, on the Centennial Trail (Trail #89) and Deerfield Trail (Trail #40) in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota. The event offers multiple distances over mostly single-track and old logging roads, with rocky and dirt surfaces and minimal pavement. The terrain features repeated climbs and descents rather than sustained altitude, producing substantial cumulative elevation gain on each route.
Average late June conditions are listed as a high near 79 degrees and a low near 53 degrees, with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. The Centennial Trail was created in 1989 for South Dakota’s centennial and is noted as a 111+ mile route that has been rerouted over time to increase single-track sections.
Finish awards for the 100 mile top three men and women are hand painted buffalo skulls by a local Native American artist. A special Man/Woman in Black skull is awarded to those who complete all four offered distances.
