XTERRA Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon
XTERRA Deadwood Mickelson is a trail running event held in Deadwood, South Dakota, centered on the Deadwood Mickelson Trailhead and surrounding Black Hills terrain. The event is part of the XTERRA Trail Run World Series and includes multiple race options over a two day weekend.
The route traverses local features such as an abandoned mining town, railroad trestles, a mountain section, monolithic rock formations, and a creek, finishing in the historic town of Deadwood. The course includes sections graded easy, intermediate, and difficult, and the full marathon is USATF certified and serves as a Boston qualifier. The event allocates 232 Trail Run World Championship slots.
Logistics and services include shuttle buses and free parking at the Days of 76 Rodeo Grounds for access to start lines, mandatory packet and chip pickup at the expo with no race day packet pickup, bag drop with transport to the finish area, and a medical tent staffed by EMTs at the finish. Aid stations appear approximately every 2 miles offering water, Powerade, banana chunks, pretzels, and sometimes M&M’s, with an extra aid station near mile 25. Portable toilets are placed at specified mile markers.
Participants cannot run with pets or strollers. Children under 14 are not eligible for the full or half marathon but may join the relay. The event publishes official results and presents awards in the finish area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
