Event Details
The Sparks Backyard Ultra is a running event held at the Sparks Marina in Sparks, Nevada. It is an official member of the Backyard Ultra Association. This qualifies entrants for spots on the National Team for championships. The event also offers mini-Backyard races of 3, 6, 12, and 24 hours.
Course Description
Participants run a course of 4.167 miles every hour. This distance is called a "yard." At the Sparks Marina, this involves running a little over two laps of a 1.95-mile loop. An additional short loop around Veteran's Plaza and Peninsula is used at the start of each yard to ensure the precise distance. The event continues until only one runner remains.
Race Rules
The main rules are:
- A runner must complete each yard in less than one hour to continue.
- No personal aid is allowed during a yard.
- The winner is the last person to complete a yard.
Aid and Amenities
The aid station provides water, ice, Heed, and typical snacks. Tents, chairs, and cots are available. Runners can bring their own personal aid station setup with their own food and drinks. Food trucks are expected to be at the venue during meal times.
Awards and Recognition
All runners who complete at least five yards receive a Finishers Award. Everyone who reaches 100 miles receives a belt buckle and a finisher shirt. Awards are given to the overall winner (Last Person Standing), the second-place finisher (Assist Award), and the top three male and female runners. Participants in the mini-Backyard races who finish their chosen time also receive an award. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
