Southern Oregon Young Marines Drug Demand Reduction 5K Dash
The Southern Oregon Young Marines organize a community event in Medford, Oregon, focused on drug demand reduction and supporting a drug free lifestyle during Red Ribbon Week (October 23 to 31). The event is presented as a running and walking dash that centers on a 5K distance and has also been described with a 10K walking or running option. Participants register in advance and may select and purchase event T shirts.
Activities at Bear Creek Park and nearby areas include a chili cook off and BBQ contest with community voting, a DIY craft booth, an educational booth, raffle prizes, a pie throwing contest, a rock climbing wall, and carnival style games. Educational and interactive demonstrations are listed, including virtual reality experiences on the effects of drugs and mock sobriety tests using impairment simulation goggles.
The race is described as a community memorial honoring a DEA agent who died in the line of duty while working against drug trafficking. The event program lists several 5K categories that include individual, para athlete, and team entries. A local official is expected to speak about community efforts related to drug and alcohol prevention. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
