South Shields Landmark Challenge
The South Shields Landmark Challenge is a team running event on 27 December 2026 that combines running, navigation and the history and heritage of South Shields. The start and finish are at The Sanddancer Pub, South Shields (NE33 2LD).
Teams receive a list of landmarks and a map one week before the event. The start and finish points are fixed, but the remaining checkpoints can be visited in any order. There is no marked route, so teams plan and navigate their own route and take a team photo at each landmark; teams submit their photos after the event and there is breakfast afterwards.
The expected distance depends on the route chosen and is approximately 10 miles. Teams must have at least two runners; there is no maximum team size. Fancy dress and Christmas-themed team outfits are permitted.
December conditions can include roads, grass, trails and hills, and there is the possibility of cold, wet and muddy weather. Participants are advised to bring a fully charged mobile phone, water, food or snacks, emergency money, suitable winter clothing, organising team contact numbers, and warm dry clothes with spare socks and shoes for afterwards.
Prizes are awarded to the first all-male team and the first all-female team. The entry fee is £13 per runner. To receive a medal on the day entrants should register by 3 December 2026; later entries can receive a medal by post (postage and packing charge may apply) or collect it after the event.
