The event is a timed competition with awards for top overall male and female finishers in the 5K and 10K, top overall 18 and under in those distances, largest team, and largest fundraising team. The Smilin' Rylen Foundation organizes the run to raise awareness about organ donation and to assist families in crisis. The event commemorates Rylen, who died at 13.5 months old in 2017 after a battle with bacterial meningitis; organ donation from that case is noted to have saved five lives.
