Event Details

The Slieve Donard mountain run takes place in County Down on Saturday 30th May 2026. The course is approximately 10 km long with an ascent of 850 metres.

Route

The race starts at Newcastle Centre on Main Street and follows the road to Donard Park. The finish is at the football pitches in Donard Park. The route in the forest is not marked, requiring navigation skills or prior knowledge of the course, especially on the descent. There is no short course option.

Mandatory Kit & Rules

All runners must bring specific mandatory equipment, including a waterproof jacket with hood, waterproof trousers, hat, gloves, a whistle, a charged mobile phone, an emergency blanket, a map, a compass, and means to carry water and emergency food. Full body cover must be carried regardless of starting weather. Kit checks will be conducted at the start and finish; failure to have required items may lead to denied entry or disqualification. Key race rules include: no headphones or earpieces allowed, no running poles permitted, and runners must comply with all instructions from organisers and marshals. Runners take primary responsibility for their own safety.

Checkpoints & Restrictions

There are three checkpoints (CP1 Saddle cairn, CP2 Summit, CP3 Quarry Gate) which must be visited in order. A cut-off time is enforced at CP1 (Saddle) at 75 minutes. Athletes not meeting this cut-off will be escorted back to the finish. Specific restrictions are in place: runners must not cross tape at the top of the quarry and must not cross the Mourne Wall. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
