About the race

The Lamplighter 40 is a 40 mile night trail run across the North York Moors that runs from sunset to sunrise. The route starts and finishes at Goathland Village Hall and includes visits to triangulation pillars and other checkpoint locations on the moorland tracks. Course marking includes some flagging, and each entrant is provided with a route GPX file and a tracker to aid navigation. There are two on-course refreshment points offering water, fizzy drinks and snacks, plus one indoor checkpoint between those stations.

Participant numbers are kept low to maintain a low-key event environment. Entrants register and collect numbers about an hour before last light; the event begins when the Lamplighter illuminates the streetlamp outside the village hall. Because the date is close to the summer solstice, most competitors will see the sunrise during the event. Finishers receive a Lamplighter medal, and there is a memento for the first male and first female finishers. Overall the Lamplighter 40 is presented as a straightforward night trail event that combines route navigation, basic on-course support and a single long loop beginning and ending at Goathland Village Hall.
