Signpost Challenge Hike

The Signpost Challenge Hike is a non-competitive navigation event starting and finishing in Marple, near Stockport. The route travels through the High Peak region, taking participants to the North and East of Marple. The course traverses several notable geographical features, including Werneth Low, Cown Edge, Lantern Pike, and Chinley Churn.

Participants navigate through villages and locations featuring industrial heritage. Both routes follow the Goyt Valley Way on the return leg to Marple. A specific feature of this event is the requirement to identify green Peak and Northern Footpath Society (PNFS) signs located along the path. The long route also includes a crossing of the Millennium walkway in New Mills.

There are two distancing options available for participants:

  • 24 miles with 4,300 feet of ascent
  • 17 miles with 3,000 feet of ascent

The event has a total time limit of 10 hours for completion. There are three outdoor and one indoor checkpoints on each route. The long route uses a Scout Hut in Hayfield as an indoor checkpoint, while the short route uses the Children's Inn at Rowarth for the same purpose. Checkpoints are stocked with a selection of drinks and snacks.

The event headquarters are located at the Marple Senior Citizens Hall in Memorial Park. Participants must bring their own mug for drinks. Entry fees include light refreshments at the start, snacks at checkpoints, and a hot meal upon finishing. Certificates are provided to all who complete their chosen course. The minimum age for participation is 16 years. Dogs are not permitted. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
