Event Overview
The Sgt. Dennis Vaccaro Memorial 5K Run/Walk returns to West Long Branch on May 23, 2026. This community event honors the legacy of Sgt. Dennis Vaccaro, a United States Army veteran and Combat Medic. The race serves to support the Dennis A. Vaccaro Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting veterans with mental health, education, and civilian life transition programs. The event also commemorates the life and contributions of Michael W. Thorne.
Course and Participation
The course is primarily flat, leading participants around Franklin Lake and through the surrounding West Long Branch neighborhood. The race begins in front of the West Long Branch Community Center and concludes behind the center. In addition to the main event, there is a free kids dash and various activities held during the day. Participants can choose between several entry options:
- 5 km Run/Walk
- 5 km Virtual Run (available from May 23 to May 30)
- Free Kids Dash
Amenities and Community Support
Pre-registered participants are guaranteed an event t-shirt. The event features live results available via text or email, along with free finish line photos. Participants who register at least three weeks in advance receive a personalized bib. Following the race, refreshments are provided, and a raffle for a grand prize is held for participants aged 21 and older.
The Lutheran Church of the Reformation Food Pantry of West Long Branch will be present to collect non-perishable food items. Each participant who contributes an item to the food bank will receive a raffle ticket. Awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers overall, as well as the top finishers in various age categories and the largest participating group.
