Savage Gulf Marathon
The Savage Gulf Marathon in Coalmont, Tennessee is a trail event held at Savage Gulf State Natural Area. The event offers multiple distances and a rucking division, and is coordinated by HardWin Adventures and the Tennessee Park Rangers Association. Proceeds support training scholarships for State Park Rangers.
Distances
- Marathon 26.2 miles
- 25K roughly 15 miles
- Ruck 25K rucking division for the 25K course
The organizer warns the course is extremely hard with steep descents and climbs into and out of the Savage Gulf on the Cumberland Plateau. The route includes rocky, technical terrain, several stream crossings, runs along bluff edges, large stone formations, waterfalls, historic sites, wildflowers, and old growth forest. The starting area and full race layout will be provided to runners about one week before the event.
Entry is limited to the first 200 registrations. Marathon entrants must have completed a marathon or longer previously; the 25K is open to all. Packet pickup is the morning of the race at the start location. All participants receive a participation award; the top three male and female finishers receive additional rewards.
The rucking division requires a dry weight of 20 lb for participants over 150 lb and 10 lb for those under 150 lb. Weigh-ins occur before the race start, weights must be clearly stamped, and random checks may occur. A five hour cutoff applies at mile 18; runners not reaching that aid station within the cutoff will be located and escorted to the finish. Event-specific COVID and social distancing protocols will apply. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
