Fiery Gizzard Run
The Fiery Gizzard Run is a trail event held in Foster Falls State Park and South Cumberland State Park, Tennessee. The course utilizes the Fiery Gizzard Trail, traveling between Grundy Forest and Foster Falls. The terrain includes fast sections on the Cumberland Plateau rim and technical segments within the gorges featuring boulders, stone staircases, and steep descents. The field is limited to 175 participants.
Participants can choose from the following distances:
- Marathon: A double traverse of the full trail starting from Foster Falls to Grundy Forest and back, with approximately 7,000 feet of elevation gain.
- Half Marathon: A single traverse of the trail from Grundy Forest to Foster Falls, measuring slightly over 13.1 miles.
- 13 Mile Ruck: A ruck-only division following the half marathon route with specific weight requirements based on body weight.
The race is cupless, and aid stations are located 6 to 8 miles apart, providing water, electrolytes, and snacks. Timing chips are worn on the left ankle. Due to the remote nature of the trail, participants are expected to be self-sufficient between stations. Leashed dogs are permitted on the course. Finisher awards are provided to those who complete their distance, and top male and female runners receive awards.
The event takes place on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. Registration for the race closes on November 27, 2026. Proceeds from the event contribute to the maintenance of the park. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
