Sassafras Mountain 8-Mile Challenge

The Sassafras Mountain 8-Mile Challenge is a mountain race located in Sunset, South Carolina. The event starts and finishes at the Rocky Bottom Retreat Center. Participants follow a course that leads to the summit of Sassafras Mountain, which is the highest point in the state.

The race route consists of a steep and winding road climb followed by a trail descent back toward the finish line. This combination provides varied terrain, including both paved surfaces and natural forest floor. The course reaches an overlook at the peak that offers panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

There are no aid stations located along the course, although the organizers provide water at the start and finish lines. The first 100 participants to register receive custom race socks. After completing the run, participants can gather for pancakes and an awards ceremony for top finishers.

On-site accommodations at the Rocky Bottom Retreat Center include primitive camping spots and cabins with multiple bedrooms. These facilities provide access to water and bathrooms for those staying over the weekend. Registration for the event typically opens in early September.
