The Sassafras 8 Mile Run/Walk is scheduled for March 8, 2026 at Rocky Bottom Retreat Center for the Blind in Sunset, SC (123 Hancock Rd, Sunset, SC 29685). The primary event is an 8-mile course called the Sassafras Struggle. The event is part of the Upstate Race Series and donations and race proceeds support the Upstate Running Club Youth Team. Course, services and awards
The course uses a road climb to the summit of Sassafras Mountain followed by a trail descent toward the finish; the summit is the highest point in South Carolina. There is no on-course aid station; water is available at the start/finish area. The event provides a finisher medal, a custom race bib, a race sticker, event-themed giveaways, and complimentary race photos. A post-race gathering includes music and pancakes. Packet pickup is offered. Top three overall finishers (male and female) receive trophies and the first three in each age group receive age-group medals. Age group categories are defined from 0–9 up to 80+. On-site lodging options at Rocky Bottom include primitive camping and cabins with bathroom and water access.
