Sam's Last Stand
Sam's Last Stand is a 96 Miler trail race on the Lone Star Hiking Trail in the Sam Houston National Forest near Cleveland, TX. The event follows the entire trail from Trailhead 1 at the western terminus to Trailhead 15 near Cleveland. Runners have 36 hours to complete the course.
The race is presented in a fatass style with minimal on-course support. Organizers will provide limited water and allow drop bags; participants are otherwise self-supported. The LSHT is marked with 2 inch by 4 inch aluminum markers and wooden directional signs. Markers with colored bands indicate connecting trails and should not be followed for this event. Runners must follow LSHT signs and be familiar with the route.
Safety notes and equipment guidance are provided. Recommended items include a rain jacket or poncho, gloves, beanie, and about 500 extra calories. Participants should watch for natural hazards such as spiderwebs and poison ivy and expect wildlife including hogs and coyotes; aggressive farm dogs may be encountered. On road sections, stay on the left side facing traffic and remain as close to the edge as possible.
This is not a for-profit race; registration fees are used to cover costs and any remaining funds will be donated to the Lone Star Hiking Trail Club.
