Sam's Last Stand

Sam's Last Stand is a 96-mile event on February 27, 2027, that follows the Lone Star Hiking Trail through Sam Houston National Forest near Cleveland, TX. The route runs from Trailhead 1 at the western terminus of the trail to Trailhead 15 near Cleveland. Runners have 36 hours to complete the entire course.

The event is organized in a fatass style with minimal support on course. Organizers provide limited water and allow drop bags; participants are otherwise self-supported. This is not a for-profit race: the registration fee covers costs and any remaining funds will be donated to the LSHT Club.

Course markings include 2" x 4" aluminum markers and wooden directional signs. Colored bands mark connecting trails and should not be followed for this event; participants must follow LSHT signs and know the route. All runners must have the route loaded on their phone and be able to show proof at bib pickup or at the race start.

On road sections, runners should stay on the left side facing traffic and remain as close to the road edge as possible. The course may present natural hazards such as spiderwebs, poison ivy, feral hogs, and coyotes, and runners should anticipate aggressive farm dogs. Recommended safety gear includes a rain jacket or poncho, gloves, a beanie, and about 500 extra calories. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
