Salute to Service 5K & 1 Miler
The Salute to Service event is a community race held in downtown Suffolk, Virginia. Organized by the Tidewater Striders and the City of Suffolk Parks and Recreation, the event serves as a celebration for those who have served in the military. The course begins at Festival Park on West Washington Street and is described as a fast and flat route through the downtown area.
Participants can choose from several event distances and categories:
- 5 km Run
- 5 km Race Walk
- 1 Mile Kid's Mile
For those participating in the 5 km events, one aid station providing water is located near the 1.5-mile mark. Registered participants in both the 5 km and 1 mile distances receive a premium t-shirt, and all finishers are presented with medals. The event includes onsite hospitality and a post-race gathering featuring a live band, pizza, beer, and other refreshments.
The competition includes specific categories for military branches. There are contests for the largest team and the fastest team, with scoring based on the branch of service. Awards are also provided for the top three overall male and female finishers in the 5 km race, as well as the top participants across various age groups ranging from 12 and under to 70 and over.
