Salem Distance Run
The Salem Distance Run marks its 52nd anniversary in Salem, Virginia. This long-standing community event features three distinct race categories held on roads and through local parkland. The event includes the following distances:
- 10K Run
- 5K Run/Walk
- 1 Mile Kids Run
The 10K and 5K routes begin on Main Street in front of the Shrewd Outdoors building and conclude at Longwood Park. The Kids Run is a one-mile fun run that takes place directly within the grounds of Longwood Park.
Participants can collect their race packets on the Friday before the event at RunAbout Sports Roanoke or on the morning of the race at the park. Participants receive a t-shirt with their registration, with size preferences guaranteed for those who register by early July.
The event concludes with an award ceremony held at Longwood Park. Parking for participants is available at Longwood Park or throughout downtown Salem. To ensure the safety of all runners, pets and strollers are not permitted on the course. The race was originally founded by Richard Browder, a retired track coach from Roanoke College.
