Runners Navigation Course - Princetown
This is a map reading and navigation workshop for runners who want more confidence in route finding or to explore beyond waymarked paths. It is also aimed at runners who may enter events where self navigation is part of the race. The course teaches map reading without relying on GPS or electronic devices.
Key navigation skills covered include orientation of the map to the ground, aiming off, thumbing the map, using a back stop, and basic compass use. The day is split into two practical sessions. After meeting at the Fox Tor Cafe for introductions and a hot drink (not included in the fee), participants complete a loop using map only so they can relate map features to the terrain. After a short lunch break in Princetown the group practices using compasses and the skills learned in the morning, then returns to Princetown in the late afternoon for a brief debrief and questions.
Participants receive a preparatory presentation before the event and a short test route after completion to practise the new skills. The instructor is a qualified Mountain Leader with decades of fell running and navigational event experience.
Required kit includes full trail or fell running clothing, trail shoes, waterproof top and bottoms, hat and gloves, warm layers, a running pack, snacks and 1 litre of water, plus a packed lunch and a change of clothing for the lunch stop. A 1:25000 Dartmoor map and a compass are useful if available; compasses will be provided on the day.
The fee is £45 valid until 09 Jan 2027. Parking is best in the main Princetown Car Park where there is a small shop and public toilets. This is a teaching session rather than a race and running pace will be gentle with frequent stops. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
