Event overview
Run Wild Races XII: Run for Tortoises takes place on May 2, 2026 at the Metro Richmond Zoo in Moseley, Virginia. The event raises funds and awareness for endangered tortoise conservation, with charity partners focused on Galapagos and Sulcata tortoises. Every in-person participant receives a race entry, bib with chip timing, a finishers medal, an event t-shirt, a same-day free zoo ticket, post-race refreshments, and sponsor swag. Spectators receive a discount on zoo admission for race day.
- 1 Mile Mini fun run, open to ages 2 and older.
- 3.1 Miles 5k all-terrain course, open to youth and adults.
- Approx. 2 Miles Wild Ninja obstacle course, open to ages 8 and older.
Race formats and logistics
The Mini course is mostly paved - about 90% pavement, 5% gravel, and 5% dirt - suitable for families and all-terrain strollers. The 5k begins inside the zoo, includes exclusive access through the Cheetah Conservation Center and areas between security fences, and moves from paved paths to dirt, mulch, grass, and gravel with winding turns, hills, and bridges. The Wild Ninja is an approximate 2-mile obstacle course with up to 42 obstacles, and features scoring tied to an IUCN-style ranking.
Participant rules: Mini children ages 2–7 must have a participating parent or designated chaperone. 5k children in younger age groups must be accompanied by a participating parent or designated chaperone. Wild Ninja competitors ages 8–14 must compete with a participating adult or have a Full Access Spectator ticket to walk the full course. Packet pickup occurs the day before and on race day at the venue. Water stations, porta-potties, and venue restrooms are available as noted by the organizer.
