Event Overview
Run the Wave is an inaugural athletic event held in Gastonia, North Carolina. The event takes place on the Al Hess Cross Country Trail at Ashbrook High School. Participants can choose between two primary distances:
- 5k Trail Race
- 1 mile Fun Walk
The 5k course starts on the high school football field and includes an initial loop around the track. The route then transitions to the trail surrounding Audrey Field, consisting of multiple loops on a variety of surfaces including dirt, grass, and some paved sections. The terrain is rolling, featuring two fast downhill segments and a moderately steep hill that participants encounter twice. The race concludes with a final ascent and a finishing lap on the track. The 1 mile option follows a shortened route that completes one loop around the field.
Logistics and Support
The course includes multiple hydration points to assist runners. A water and snack station is located at the start and finish area, with two additional water stations situated on the trail near the 1-mile and 2-mile markers.
Participants who register by March 18 are guaranteed an event t-shirt. For those registering after this date, shirts are distributed based on available supply. The event proceeds support the Ashbrook Foundation, which provides funding for student scholarships, teacher grants, and school programs in the arts and athletics.
