Event Overview
The Run Because You Can is a community 5K event hosted by the non-profit organization Runnin’ for Rhett. The 2026 edition marks its 15th year. It serves as a celebration for approximately 3,000 youth athletes from the Sacramento area who have completed a six-week after-school Youth Fitness Program. The event aims to support these youth, and the program remains free for participants.
Race Details
The event takes place at William Land Park in Sacramento, California, near the intersection of Freeport Boulevard and Sutterville Road. Participants can choose from two race options:
- A timed 5K (3.1 miles).
- An untimed 1/4 mile dash for children aged 8 and under.
The course starts near the corner of Sutterville and Freeport. The first two miles follow tree-lined streets within the park, and the third mile leads back to the finish line near the start area. One aid station with water and restrooms is located at the midpoint of the 5K course.
Registration and Logistics
Registration for the 2026 event opens on December 8, 2025. On-site, day-of-race registration is also available. The entry fee is $35 for the 5K and $15 for the untimed 1/4 mile dash.
Packet pickup occurs on race morning at Land Park near the start line. Packets include a bib number and a cotton shirt; a technical shirt upgrade is available for an additional fee. Youth Fitness participants receive their packets from their coaches.
