Rosehill Cemetery 'Crypt' 5K
The Rosehill Cemetery 'Crypt' 5K takes place on the grounds of the historic Rosehill Cemetery on the north side of Chicago. This Victorian-era cemetery opened in 1864 and spans 350 acres. It holds the distinction of being the largest cemetery within the City of Chicago and the second largest in the state of Illinois. Participants follow a course that winds through scenic paths, past various monuments and large mausoleums.
The grounds serve as the final resting place for several notable figures, including more than ten former Chicago mayors and individuals such as Oscar Mayer, John G. Shedd, and Jack Brickhouse. The cemetery also contains the graves of advertising executive Leo Burnett, Sears founder Julius Rosenwald, and numerous Civil War veterans.
The event offers two main participation options:
- 5K Chip-Timed Run
- 5K Fun Run/Walk
Following the activities on the cemetery grounds, a post-event gathering is held at the nearby Fireside Restaurant & Tavern. The event provides a unique opportunity to explore a historic Chicago landmark during the fall season. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
