Root River Triathlon

Root River Triathlon is a non-swimming triathlon held in Houston, Minnesota, based at the Houston Nature Center, 215 W Plum Street. The event follows the Root River valley route with a downstream paddle, a road bike return to Houston that includes some hills, and a fairly level run along the Root River trail and through Houston streets to a finish in Trailhead Park. The event began in 1998 and is organized by the City of Houston.

Distances for the three legs:

  • Paddle 6.8 miles
  • Bike 7.9 miles
  • Run 3 miles

Participation is open to men and women of every age; competitors aged 17 years and younger require guardian consent. Entry formats include individual canoe or kayak entries, two-person canoe or kayak teams who paddle together and complete bike and run separately, and relay teams of three or four people where team members complete different legs. Relay breakdowns include a three-person team with one kayak, one bike, one run, and a four-person team with two canoe or kayak paddlers, one bike, and one run.

A United States Coast Guard approved personal flotation device is required while on the river. Listed entries show a registration fee of $55. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
