Root River Triathlon
Root River Triathlon is a non swimming triathlon held in the Root River Valley near Houston, Minnesota on May 15, 2027. The event began in 1998 and is organized by the City of Houston. Participation is open to men and women of every age; participants under 17 must have guardian consent.
The course consists of a downstream paddle on the Root River from Houston to Mound Prairie, a road bike ride back to Houston that includes several hills, and a fairly level run that begins on the Root River Trail, continues through the streets of Houston, and finishes in Trailhead Park.

- 6.8 miles Canoeing or Kayaking
- 7.9 miles Bike
- 3 miles Run
Entry options include individual canoe or kayak, two-person canoe or kayak (paddle together, complete bike and run separately), three-person relay (each individual completes one leg), and four-person relay (two-person canoe or kayak, one bike, one run). A US Coast Guard approved personal flotation device is required while on the river. Listed registration opens May 18, 2026 and closes May 31, 2026.
