Root River Triathlon
The Root River Triathlon is scheduled for May 16, 2026 in Houston, Minnesota. The event is based at the Houston Nature Center and finishes at Trailhead Park. The triathlon is a non-swimming format that uses paddle, bike, and run segments.
The course begins with a downstream paddle on the Root River from Houston to Mound Prairie. Participants then complete a road bike ride back toward Houston; the bike course includes some hills. The final segment is a fairly level run that starts on the Root River Trail and continues through the streets of Houston before returning to Trailhead Park.
Distances for the main course are:
- 6.8 mile Canoeing or Kayaking
- 7.9 mile Bike
- 3 mile Run
Registration options include individual kayak and canoe entries, two-person kayak and canoe teams, and three- and four-person relay teams. Participation is open to men and women of all ages; participants age 17 and younger require guardian consent. The event was first held in 1998 and was established by the City of Houston.
