Race formats, course features, and awards
The half marathon and marathon are run on trail/road mix typical of Hill Country terrain. Registered half-marathon runners receive a free, trail-specific 12-week training plan built for Hill Country terrain. The Backyard Ultra uses a 4.167-mile loop that must be completed each hour to continue; any runner who misses the hourly cutoff is removed. The Backyard Ultra field is limited to about 20-25 runners and will convert to a timed endurance format if it does not fill.
Event rituals include a midway lasso task called The Catch, a self-check token moved on a pegboard, and cowbells rung at loop finishes. Awards and swag list a Winner’s Buckle (Last One Standing), a Finisher Buckle (Austin’s Rodeo Trail Run), finisher tokens, and participant shirts.
