Format, course and awards

The Backyard Ultra uses a loop format where each loop is 4.167 miles (6.706 km). Runners start a new loop each hour and must finish the loop within that hour to remain in the race; any remaining minutes within the hour are available as rest. The event continues until only one runner remains, who receives the Winner's Buckle titled "Last One Standing." At the halfway point of each loop, runners must lasso a post in a ritual called The Catch and then move a token (washer, chip, or bracelet) on a pegboard to verify completion. An aid station called the Chuckwagon provides hydration and fuel. Runners ring a cowbell in the finish area when they complete a loop. Additional recognition includes finisher tokens labeled "Thrown from the Bull" or "Bucked at Loop #__" and participant shirts. A runner's buckle is awarded for completing three loops (listed as 13 miles). Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
