The Rocky Raccoon 100 is an endurance trail event held annually in February within the pine forests of Huntsville State Park, Texas. The course consists of a 20 mile loop that runners traverse multiple times depending on their chosen distance. The terrain features gently undulating trails on a bed of pine needles, crossing wooden bridges and circling a lake. While the course is not known for rocks, participants should be mindful of tree roots.
The event offers several race distances:
- 100 miles (5 x 20 mile loops)
- 100 km (1 x 2 mile short lap, followed by 3 x 20 mile loops)
- Youth 1 mile
The 100 mile distance is a qualifying race for the Western States 100. Runners who finish the full distance within 30 hours become eligible for the Western States lottery. The event uses chip timing, with timing mats located at the start and finish lines to provide live split updates.
Full aid station support is provided throughout the course, offering a variety of food and beverage options. This is a cupless event, meaning participants must bring their own reusable cups or bottles for hydration. Pacers are permitted for both the 100 mile and 100 km distances after the runner has completed 49 miles. The park offers various lodging options, including campsites, RV hook-ups, and screened shelters, which must be reserved through the organizer's system for the race weekend.
