Event overview
RISE: Thermopylae is a Backyard endurance event held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, in Raphine, VA. The event takes place on a private property at the base of the Allegheny Mountains bordering George Washington National Forest and uses over 160 acres of rugged terrain and challenge zones. The format mixes backcountry trails, single-track, water crossings, mud, steep elevations, and obstacle-style challenges.

Each tier uses a marked backcountry loop and structured challenge zones. Participants carry weighted loads and perform tasks such as push, pull, carry, climb, crawl, and drag. The 12H tier adds sandbag evolutions and designated coach interactions. The 24H tier adds intensive mental and memory tests, cold water exposure, and more extended ruck and selection-style testing. Sleep is highly limited in the 12H and 24H tiers. Basic aid stations will provide water, electrolytes, and fruit; participants should bring personal nutrition and medical supplies. Gear guidance includes a ruck with a weight plate or sandbag (example weights listed as 20 lb for men and 10 lb for women). Packet pickup is Friday, April 17, 12:00–4:00 PM at Giant Food Store, Pantops (Charlottesville, VA); onsite check-in opens on race day. Refund policy: no refunds within 60 days; more than 90 days out yields 50% credit; two-year credit for military, first responder duty, or pregnancy deferral.
